Description
Gustave Baumann is best known for his printmaking using woodblocks, but he was involved in all kinds of artistic endeavors. He made oil paintings, built furniture, and even carved and performed with marionettes. He is also recognized for his role as an area coordinator of the Public Works of Art Project, a New Deal program to employ artists in the 1930s. He lived and worked in Santa Fe, New Mexico for over fifty years. Baumann’s images of southwestern landscapes and life in the pueblo are icons of American Western art.
