IDD and Sensory-Friendly Visits
AMWA offers free Special Tours of the Museum and optional activities for organized groups of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) any weekday upon request, depending on schedule and staffing. Groups that might enjoy a sensory-friendly experience at AMWA should request their free Special Tour on a Tuesday or Thursday, when the Museum is closed to the public. Special Tour options are for community organizations, facilities, or other coordinated groups with leaders or staff in attendance. Two weeks’ notice is required.
Please complete the IDD Group Tour Form indicating desired dates and times and any activities that might be of interest to the group.
Some of the Museum’s IDD and sensory-friendly activity options include:
- Discussion about a few artworks
- Coloring sheets
- Scavenger hunt of subjects in paintings
- Puzzles
- Drawing or sketching
- Handheld audio guides
IDD Tour Request
For organized groups looking to visit the Museum, visits by appointment can be arranged, subject to availability of
museum staff. The person requesting the visit must be an official representative of the group involved. Admission fees may be waived according to the American Museum of Western Art’s policies. Group leaders may be required to participate in an orientation to the Museum and its policies and procedures prior to such visits.
Please Note: Due to the fragile nature of the collection and the intimate nature of the galleries, children under the age of eight are not admitted to the museum, and children under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by at least one adult for every four children. All children must be supervised at all times by their accompanying group leaders. (Visitors will be asked to check food, beverages, overcoats, backpacks, briefcases, large bags, umbrellas and any other large items at the Museum entrance.)
Group tours require two weeks advance notice and are subject to availability of Museum staff to lead a tour on the day and time requested. Please complete the information below and submit
