Volunteer

AMWA is recruiting a new volunteer docent class to begin in January 2025.

Are you interested in western American history, visual art, and meeting new people?

If you have a passion for sharing knowledge and enjoy working with people, becoming a museum docent at AMWA could be for you. AMWA’s docents help make the art and history of the American West come to life by offering public tours of the Museum on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Docents are from many walks of life but have several things in common. They are:
• Great communicators who are enthusiastic about the collection.
• Lifelong learners. They enjoy learning new things and are willing to study the collection, so they can share the exciting stories behind these artworks.
• Able to talk with people of different ages, levels of education, and backgrounds.
• Flexible, creative, and dependable.

All applicants must complete an interview, a criminal background check, and be willing to attend four training sessions. There will also be some independent study, and tour shadowing required. Training includes basic orientation and procedures, formal elements of art, major themes and milestones in Western art/history, and touring techniques and challenges.

Training Sessions
• January 21, 2025, 10 am to 12 pm
• February 4, 2025, 10 am to 12 pm
• February 18, 2025, 10 am to 12 pm
• March 4, 2025, 10 am to 12 pm

Docents have the satisfaction of providing a valuable service to museum visitors, but they also receive free admission to select AMWA programs, continuing education opportunities, field trips to other cultural organizations, and social events with fellow docents.
