Artful Insights: Artists of the New Deal
$10.00
Monday, November 4, 2024, 3:00 p.m.
Surprisingly, the Great Depression was not an awful time to be an artist in America. Several US government-sponsored programs were put in place to get people back to work, including artists and other creative professionals. Programs such as the Public Works of Art Project, The Federal Art Project, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, and the Treasury Section of Fine Arts hired artists to make public works of art or teach art to communities. Several painters on display at the American Museum of Western Art received commissions from these New Deal programs, some of which can still be seen around the state and region. At this Artful Insight, we will look at one New Deal painting that is a visitor favorite here at AMWA, Frank Mechau’s Wild Horse Race.
