Peter Hurd was an American painter renowned for his depictions of the people and landscapes of New Mexico. Hurd was born in Roswell, New Mexico but left to attend West Point in 1921. He withdrew after two years to pursue art, studying under N.C. Wyeth in Pennsylvania and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He married Wyeth’s daughter, and fellow artist, Henriette, in 1929. Together they settled in New Mexico where they lived from the 1930s onward. He was a war correspondent and portrait painter, but New Mexico was a consistent source of inspiration for Hurd, often capturing the region’s arid scenery and rural life.
