Marsden Hartley was one of the most sophisticated modernists and introspective artists to come to New Mexico in the early 20th century. Mercurial and ever-searching for love, acceptance, and peace; he was always trying to express his identity visually. Hartley’s New Mexico pictures, like the one in the Anschutz Collection, are a major fulcrum in his career and life.
