Helen Frankenthaler began exhibiting paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. While initially associated with abstract expressionism, her style was ever-changing throughout her sixty-year career. Her use of fluid shapes, lyrical gestures, and methods of fusing paint to canvas was highly influential to later generations of abstract painters. Frankenthaler used large formats to paint simplified or abstract compositions, but always with the goal of it looking spontaneous. She once said, “A really good picture looks as if it’s happened at once.”
