Throughout his life, artist Emil James Bisttram experimented with abstract and non-objective visuals to depict not just the world around him, but spiritual and conceptual ideas important to him personally and intellectually. He also experimented with various art media from oil and encaustic paints, pencils and inks, to polyester resins. Bisttram’s tendency toward experimentation and abstracted visuals is indicative of modern art movements weeping the western art world in the 1900s, though he never seemed to settle on a specific style or medium as many of his contemporaries did. He maintained a sense of artistic exploration throughout his career.
