William Tylee Ranney’s art career began as a portraitist, but he is best known for his American historical paintings. His work depicted scenes from the Revolutionary War, Western frontier life, and hunting and fishing adventures. His promising career was cut short when he died at the young age of forty-four from tuberculosis. This Artful Insight will illuminate the work of Ranney, widely regarded as one of the most important pre-Civil War American painters.
