The annual summer Gathering of the Fur Trade in the Rocky Mountains, now referred to as the Rendezvous, happened every year from 1825 to 1840. The Rendezvous was attended by thousands of Native Americans, hundreds of mountain men, and, of course, fur traders and fur companies. The only artist known to attend was Alfred Jacob Miller in 1837. His paintings of the Rendezvous are the only firsthand visual records of these gatherings. Utilizing the Anschutz Collection’s paintings by Miller, this Artful Insight will explore the reasons behind the beginning and ending of the Rendezvous, and why it remains a source of both controversy and inspiration.
