Nicolai Fechin was a Russian-born American painter celebrated for his colorful and expressive portraits. In 1923, amid post-revolutionary upheaval, Fechin and his family immigrated from Europe to New York. While in New York, Fechin developed tuberculosis and decided to move his family west for the drier climate. The Fechin’s eventually settled in Taos, New Mexico, where Nicolai began painting the subject matter and style that he would come to be known for. In addition to his paintings of the people and places of the Southwest, Fechin was a skilled woodworker and craftsman. He handcrafted his adobe home in Taos, which now houses the Taos Art Museum.
